Born in Lagny (Seine-el-Marne), France, Edouard-Leon Cortes was a member of the Society of French Artists beginning in 1902. At the age seventeen he began his studies at the school of Fine Arts in Paris. His powerful and imaginative technique was awarded the Silver Medal in 1913 and the Gold Medal in 1916.
