George Benjamin Luks (American 1867-1933) MAINE LAKE VIEW oil on board signed "George Luks, Maine" lower left 10 x 13in. George Luks was known for his raucous behavior as well as his art work . Born in the coal regions of Pennsylvania, he began his studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts but his rebellious nature resisted the discipline, he left after one month. While in Europe Luks studied in Dusseldorf, Paris and London. Luks was a member of the American Society of Sculptors and Engravers in New York, the New York Water Color Club, the National Association of Portrait painters and the Boston Art Club. Luks numbered as one of "The Eight" American painters, distinguished for their participation in the Armory Show of 1913 and for their exhibitions at the prestigious Macbeth Gallery in 1908. A rowdy, boastful but good-natured fellow, Luks was also known to be a heavy drinker. On October 29, 1933, George Luks was found dead on the streets of New York, a casualty of a bar-room brawl.
