Emile Albert Gruppe (American 1876-1978) LANDSCAPE WITH LAKE oil on canvas signed lower left "Emile A Gruppe" 14 ¼ x 16in. Son of renowned painter Charles Gruppe, Emile Gruppe was born in Rochester New York . Along with his fathers influence Gruppe studied with George Bridgeman at the Carnegie Art School. The Art Students' League in Woodstock New York, with John F. Carlson, Provincetown, MA, Charles Hawthorne, Richard Miller, and George Chapman as well as the National Academy of design in New York City. Gruppe exhibited widely including the National Academy of Design (1916-1938), the Art Alliance of New York (1934-1946), and the Rockport (Maine) Art Association (1925-1946). His work is now in such important collections as the White House in Washington D.C., the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the de Cordova Museum in Lincoln, Massachusetts. He is known for his impressionistic landscapes, and especially for his Gloucester and Rockport fishing boat scenes.
