Edgar Alwin Payne (American 1882-1947) "TAOS ADOBES" or "Canon Duchez" oil on board signed "Edgar Payne" lower right 10 1/8 x 11 15/16in. Labels verso authenticated 1978, Edward Goldfield Galleries Los Angeles, CA. Gerald F Peters, Owings-Dewey Fine Art Appraiser. One of the best known of the California Impressionists, Payne's characteristic style consists of large brushstrokes combined with lively color and dramatic compositions. His favorite subject was the California Sierras. Payne was a member of the Salmagundi Club and the Allied Artists' Association in New York, the International Society of Art and Letters, the California Art Club, the Ten Painters of Los Angeles and the Laguna Beach Art Association. His work is highly sought after and is included in the Southwest Museum of Los Angeles, the National Academy of Design in New York and the National Collection of Fine Arts, Senate Building in Washington D.C.
